Specialty Materials Inc. (SMI, Lowell, Massachusetts, USA) has passed ISO 9001:2015 registration for aircraft, aerospace, sporting goods, and industrial applications that require high mechanical and physical properties.

The company cooperated with Toray Advanced Composites (Morgan Hill, California, USA) to provide its Gen-2 Hy-Bor material, which combines boron fiber with Toray's T1100G carbon fiber in a variety of resin systems, including epoxy resins and cyanate esters , BMI and polyimide. SMI also recently added a fiber placement tow product to its product line.

It is said that SMI's SCS SiC fiber has excellent high-temperature mechanical properties, which can improve the strength, stiffness and service temperature of titanium-based composites, and provide toughness for ceramic matrix composites (CMC). According to reports, silicon carbide fibers also improve the efficiency of solar cells used in photovoltaic modules. SMI stated that it is one of the few domestic silicon carbide fiber suppliers with production capacity. The company claims that its premier SiC fiber SCS Ultra has the highest creep rupture strength of all SiC fibers; a new version with a smaller diameter (3 mils) is now available.

Overall, SMI's fibers and advanced composite materials are said to provide engineers and manufacturers in various fields with unique solutions, including structural integrity and controlled thermal expansion. All advanced materials and composite materials are manufactured through strict process control and full traceability, meeting aerospace tolerances. Examples of applications and products that use the company’s advanced materials are diverse, such as General Atomics’ Predator, Boeing’s F-15 EX, gas turbine engine components, bicycle frames, fly sticks and hockey sticks.

Specialty Materials Inc. is a small, female-owned company that is flexible and decisive in the market. The result is a successful business with increased sales and employee numbers. Specialty Materials was awarded the 2020 Massachusetts District 1 and National Subcontractor of the Year by the Association of Small Businesses.

Boom Technology introduced its plan to validate a cost-effective supersonic passenger aircraft.

The use of continuous fibers in additive manufacturing systems is not trivial, but it is being done. With the development and maturity of this manufacturing technology, the options for applying it to all fields from automobiles to aerospace to consumer composite materials will greatly increase, creating a large number of new opportunities for the composite materials industry. Read here to find out who provides which additive manufacturing technology for composite manufacturing.

Wind energy is putting the uncertainty as a symbol of the industry in the rearview mirror. Electricity from this renewable resource is cheaper and more competitive than ever before—and increasingly so. This huge consumer of composite materials has a bright future.
